Ruben Minuto – THE LARSEN’S SESSIONS – Live In Studio

Dopo una breve ma intensa campagna di crowfunding che si e’ conclusa con successo nonostante il momento molto particolare, il 15 gennaio e’ stato finalmente pubblicato The Larsen’s Sessions. Quarto album solista di Ruben Minuto, una sorta di “best of” che raccoglie brani originali riarrangiati e cover magistralmente e profondamente rivisitate. Questo album nasce anche come seguito naturale di Think of Paradise, pubblicato nel 2019 e lanciato a Febbraio del 2020. I due album sono profondamente legati e frutto di una collaborazione decennale tra Ruben Minuto e Luca Andrea Crippa, amico arrangiatore e chitarrista, e vedono la partecipazione di tanti musicisti che da anni condividono, in varie formazioni, l’avventura musicale di Ruben.

Pubblicato per l’etichetta indipendente Delta Promotion, e’ un album interamente registrato Live in Studio, senza sovraincisioni e in pochissime takes, molto spesso buona la prima. Condensa tutta l’energia accumulata in lunghi mesi senza poter suonare dal vivo, e questa energia trasporta l’ascoltatore in mezzo ai musicisti, trasmettendo tutta l’emozione del momento. E’ un album intenso, sia per le musiche che per i testi, sia quelli a firma Ruben Minuto che le cover, le quali, pur non raggiungendo nei testi la raffinatezza lessicale e poetica dei brani di Ruben, vengono esaltate negli arrangiamenti e nelle esecuzioni.

Si alternano vari momenti in duo, combo acustico con contrabbasso e batteria e full band e tre meravigliose voci femminili si alternano nei duetti impreziosendo le trame degli intrecci vocali. Tutta questa magia e’ stata magistralmente registrata da Larsen Premoli nel suo RecLab Studios non solo in audio ma anche in video che ci fanno assistere al momento in cui tutta questa Bellezza veniva indelebilmente fissata su “nastro”

L’album si apre con una cover di un classico Bluegrass, MOLLY AND TENBROOKS, e non credo ci sia modo migliore per raccontare questo brano se non lasciare a Ruben la possibilita’ di farlo lui direttamente:

Ogni volta che parlo di Blue Grass, una delle mie più grandi passioni, amo sottolineare le contrapposizioni emotive che scaturiscono dall’ascolto delle melodie rispetto a quelle scaturite dall’ascolto o dalla lettura dei testi dei brani.
Le prime, tendenti all’allegria, alla spensieratezza grazie agli intrecci sonori spesso velocissimi intessuti dai vari Banji, mandolini, violini, chitarre o dobri ( mi si perdoni l’italianizzazione dei plurali) e costruzioni armoniche per la maggior parte delle volte su tonalità maggiori e molto semplici.
Le seconde invece cupe , tristi, disperate a volte ansiogene a causa dei frequenti rimandi a tragedie umane di ogni tipo: Perdita di lavoro , Mancanza di soldi, tradimenti reiterati, incidenti ferroviari, alcolismo, morte di ogni componente della famiglia senza riguardo nemmeno per l’età del morituro.
La cosa mi è sempre “ suonata” strana, fuori posto.
A questo punto , per qualche strano meccanismo mio mentale, ho voluto provare a prendere in mano un classico di questo genere musicale e “ Tirarlo a pari”. Ho quindi scelto “ MOLLY AND TENBROOKS”: un brano di cui non possiamo non ricordare versioni imperiture come per esempio quelle degli Stanley Brothers o di Bill monroe ( The father of Blue Grass music) ed ho voluto, coadiuvato dalle idee del mio amico e collaboratore L A CREEP, cambiarne il mood, nel tentativo di farlo suonare triste almeno quanto intristisce l’ascolto del suo testo.
Perchè?
Non lo so.
Non chiedetemi troppo.
Una storia di cavalli, di competizione fra campioni e, naturalmente, di morte.
Una storia vera, datata addirittura intorno agli anni settanta del milleottocento.
Non so se ve ne fosse effettivamente necessità ma io mi sono divertito molto tanto a riarrangiarla quanto a registrarla in questa nuova , diversa versione.
Spero sinceramente che possa piacervi.

Jimmy Two Steps invece proviene dal primo album solista di Ruben del 2004, I Hate to Sing the Blues, e qui possiamo vedere come i testi di Ruben trascendano i cliche’ linguistici dei generi con i quali molti hanno cercato di etichettarlo, qui siamo lontanissimi dai testi tradizionali del blues.

You Are The One That I Want, si e’ quella di Grease, si quella di John Travolta e Olivia Newton-John, ma come mai l’avete sentita prima!

E’ stato il primo brano di The Larsen’s Sessions che ho ascoltato e mi ha letteralmente fatto impazzire, e’ talmente inaspettato e con l’intro di chitarra di Ruben che ti porta subito in altri territori musicali, quando parte a cantare rimani fulminato, e poi quando entra la voce di Jane Jeresa e’ pelle d’oca istantanea. Se tutto questo non bastasse la lapsteel di Luca Andrea Crippa ti da il colpo di grazie finale. Dopo questa cover l’asticella si e’ alzata per tutti quelli che vorranno da ora in poi approcciarsi alla cover di un brano noto.

Con High Heel Shoes torniamo alla potenza di fuoco della Band al completo.

Se Be Alive in Think of Paradise era un momento sublime di musica e poesia, in questa versione in duo acustico con la partecipazione di Sophie Elle tocca livelli ultraterreni di perfezione, e non vorresti che l’outro strumentale finisse mai.

Who Cares, dall’album This, qui proposta in duo acustico con le chitarre di Ruben e Luca che commuovono e la voce di Sophie Elle con una delicatezza di un’altro pianeta accarezza le parole di Ruben intrecciandosi alla sua linea vocale. Questo e’ uno di quei momenti che non si ripetono.

In the Hands of Time, a mio avviso e’ l’apice di questo viaggio musicale. La Lap Steel di Luca ci porta in un’altra dimensione, la voce di Lucia Lombardo prima accompagna Ruben e poi si ritaglia un momento solista che e’ da brividi, ma qui e’ il testo di Ruben a entrarci dentro, e’ una poesia dedicata ad un amico, la dolorosa riflessione che le nostre vite sono solo dei piccoli segreti nelle mani del Tempo.

Il viaggio nella musica di Ruben si chiude con il classico Why Should I Be So Lonely di Jimmy Rodgers, uno dei padri del Country e che con la sua musica ha influenzato molti altri generi derivati e affini. Quindi un po’ a chiudere con qualcosa da cui tutto e’ partito.
